Direct Accountability
The Direct Accountability Program is an alternative to prosecution for eligible individuals who have no or limited prior involvement in the adult court system, and have been charged with minor criminal offences. It involves offenders being held accountable through community-based sanctions.
Participants in the program must be willing to assume responsibility for the actions that led to the charge and be prepared to make amends for their actions.
A Community Justice Worker attends court on a daily basis and accepts referrals to the program from the Crown Attorney. An accused can ask their Counsel or Duty Counsel about their eligibility and their Counsel could recommend the matter for consideration by the Crown. Participation in the program is voluntary.
The Community Justice Worker outlines the sanction(s) to be completed by the accused, monitors sanction completion and reports the outcome back to the court. Sanctions could include one or more of the following:
- Referral to educational/informational programs such as Alcohol and Drug Awareness, Anger Management or Stop Shop-Theft
- Counselling sessions
- Community service work
- Apology to victim or others affected
- Restitution or compensation to the victim or community
- Donation to a registered charitable organization
The Direct Accountability Program is funded by the Ministry of the Attorney General as part of the Justice on Target Strategy.
